Hey there, time traveller!

Canad Inns Fort Garry was the place to be on Oct. 27 as more than 325 people participated in the Healthy Aging Expo — Focus on Living event hosted by the Fort Garry Seniors Resource Council and Pembina Active Living 55+.
Rooms were filled with over 40 exhibitors and displays offering information regarding services, programs and products available to assist community members in maintaining an active lifestyle, mentally, physically and spiritually as they age.
People attended from all across Winnipeg, some coming by the busload from their local seniors centre. Rumour has it there were guests from as far away as Selkirk and Stonewall.
Judging by the numbers attending the expo and the conversations I had that afternoon, it was clear that older adults are looking for information and resources to help them remain independent as the years go by.
Our government values the contributions older adults make to our communities. We are committed to providing resources to empower them and enhance their quality of life. Recently, in our Speech from the Throne, we committed to becoming leaders in home care innovation, enabling seniors to stay in their homes as long as possible. We will enhance funding to seniors centres and work with our partners to develop more seniors housing. In addition to continuing to build new personal care homes, we will focus on specialized care for patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Older adults with questions and looking for information are welcome to contact the Seniors Information Line at 204-945-6565 to request publications such as Safety for Seniors and the Legal Information Guide.
The Seniors and Healthy Aging Secretariat is also a source of information for older adults, their families, caregivers and seniors organizations. They can be reached at 204-945-2127 or www.gov.mb.ca/shas
A & O: Support Services for Older Adults provides services for older Manitobans with a goal of supporting and empowering them. They can be contacted at 204-956-6440 or www.ageopportunity.mb.ca
I would like to congratulate the Fort Garry Seniors Resource Council and Pembina Active Living 55+ on a successful event and on their ongoing contribution to enhancing the lives of older Manitobans.
Thank you also to the many volunteers who worked to make this day a success.
