RM of Macdonald residents will see a new face behind the desk at the municipal office in Sanford.

Chief administrative officer Tom Raine has retired after 38 years, and Daryl Hrehirchuk has been hired to fill the position. Although Raine’s seen many changes in Macdonald over the decades, he declined to be interviewed.

Hrehirchuk, 43, is pleased to begin his new role in Macdonald.

“Macdonald is a well-respected municipality,” he said.

He was most recently employed as RM of Portage la Prairie CAO for almost 10 years, citing construction of the PCU Centre and damage caused by the 2011 and 2014 Assiniboine River floods as being major events during his time.

Hrehirchuk said there are similarities between the two municipalities in terms of their rural and urban mix. However, Macdonald is experiencing more residential and commercial development which will make his new job more challenging.

“I look forward to getting to know local developers,” he said.

He grew up in Dauphin, and after graduation, worked in various positions with the City of Dauphin. While he began CGA training, he switched to earning the Manitoba Municipal Administration certificate through the University of Manitoba. His first CAO job was with the Village of MacGregor and RM of South Norfolk.

Hrehirchuk said he’s looking forward to launching a redesigned RM of Macdonald website, expected to be ready within the next few months, as it will enable faster communication with local residents.
