Run raises $10K for breakfast program

The Linden Woods Fall Classic presented a cheque for $10,860 to Ralph Maybank School on April 29 to support breakfast programs.

The money will be used to buy food for programs offered at eight schools in Pembina Trails School Division. 

The Linden Woods Fall Classic began as a fundraiser for a new playground in the public park space behind École Van Walleghem School and has since supported other wellness projects in the community. 

The Linden Woods Fall Classic includes a 10-kilometre run, five-kilometre run, and Mighty Mile, attracting over 300 participants each year. The 13th annual Linden Woods Fall Classic will be held on Sun., Oct. 2, 2016.

Police arrest man in connection to River Heights break-ins

Winnipeg Police have made an arrest following a number of residential break-ins between January and April.

Police said they arrested James Edwin Adams, 41, on April 26 after a resident on Oxford Street in River Heights noticed suspicious activity and called the police.

He has been charged with numerous property-related offences due to his alleged involvement and was remanded into custody.

Police allege the suspect would travel the back lanes on bike looking for opportunities and break-in to garages, parked vehicles and damage property in the process.

The River Heights-based Smashed Window Club is advising property owners to keep their garages and homes locked in response to the break-ins in the community.

Strap on your dancing shoes

The Women’s Health Research Foundation of Canada is hosting a night of dancing for health.

The local foundation will be serving dinner followed by a professional dance instruction and demonstration in several classical ballroom styles at the Centro Caboto Centre (1055 Wilkes Ave.).

The event takes place on May 5 and starts at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $100 and include a partial tax receipt.  All levels of experience and those with two left feet are welcome.

The Women’s Health Research Foundation is dedicated to the improvement of women’s health, social, psychological, and physical well being, according to its website.

U of M daycare gets a boost

The University of Manitoba Graduate Students’ Association has donated $300,000 to the university’s Front and Centre campaign to support the campus daycare.

The University of Manitoba Graduate Students’ Association (UMGSA) represents the nearly 3,800 graduate students at the University of Manitoba.

“The UMGSA’s commitment to the Front and Centre campaign aims to ensure affordable and accessible access to campus child care services, not only for graduate students, but for all students at the University of Manitoba,” Kristjan Mann, president of the UMGSA, said in a statement.
