Portage la Prairie MLA Ian Wishart, 61, has been named the province’s Minister of Education and Training.
The agrologist, who lives near Portage la Prairie, was elected as PC candidate for a second term. He was named to Brian Pallister’s cabinet earlier this month.
Wishart said, as minister, his priorities are to increase high school graduation rates, especially for Aboriginal students, and provide more opportunities for post-secondary training for recent graduates and those already in the workforce.
“We’re never really done learning,” he said.
From a local viewpoint, Wishart said he plans to work on improvements to the basis public school system in Portage la Prairie and other communities, as well as support post-secondary education offered in Portage by Red River College.
He said the PC government wants to work together to improve outcomes for Manitobans.
“It’s all about the quality of education,” he said.
