Local business owners are teaming up with a Bomber legend to fight against hunger.

For the first time this year, Bronuts will join forces with former Winnipeg Blue Bomber Obby Khan, owner of Shawarma Khan and host the Fast and Furious Feast, which is held in support of Winnipeg Harvest as part of the Give 30 campaign. Khan, who lives in Royalwood, is a Give 30 Team Winnipeg member. East India Company and Kawaii Crepe are also participating again this year to make it a quartet of Exchange District-area businesses working together for the cause.

On June 3, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., the feast will be held at Shawarma Khan (225 McDermot Ave.) as part of the First Fridays in the Exchange series, organizers say. Tickets to the all-you-can-dinner are $20 per person and the proceeds go to Winnipeg Harvest and Give 30.

Meghan Zahari, 24, is one of the co-owners of Bronuts, which is located at 3-100 King St. She owns the business, which opened its doors in April 2015, with her husband, Brett Zahari, also 24, and his brother, Dylan Zahari, 22.

She told The Lance that Khan approached the entrepreneurs about the initiative and it felt like a perfect fit.

“We knew Obby from being based in the same neighbourhood and once a month we make a large donation to a community charity, so this seemed like a great opportunity,” said Zahari, who lives in Norwood, noting that around 400 individuals are expected to attend the feast.

“The event is getting really big and for $20, it’s a pretty good deal. It’s fun for us to find ways to give back to the community and because we serve food, this makes sense. When we first talked about opening the business, we wanted to be in a position to add value to people’s days and to the community.”

Give 30 was founded in 2012 by Toronto lawyer and social activist Ziyaad Mia to motivate individuals of all ethnic beliefs and backgrounds to give to food banks during Ramadan.

Ramadan is the month when Muslims don’t eat or drink anything between dawn and sunset for 30 days, including water. This year, Ramadan begins on June 6 and will end on July 5.

Describing the mantra of the business, Zahari said the idea started with the concept of two brothers making doughnuts — hence the name of the shop.

“We make artisan doughnuts from scratch every day and everything is fresh and made by hand in the kitchen. We try to make a really good product and have lots of fun doing it,” she said.
