Although summer is just beginning in Winnipeg, organizers at the Granite Curling Club are already thinking about getting new players on the ice this fall.

The historic club at 1 Granite Way, which lies between the neighbourhoods of Fort Rouge and Wolseley, is planning a new drop-in curling program that will be launched in October.

According to club manager Jamie Hay and Granite Women’s Curling League president Kathleen Dawson, the Sunday night drop-in session is likely the only one of its kind in Winnipeg.

“People who want to try the game are not sure where to go. You can’t just join a team and start playing if you don’t know how to do it. So this is a great opportunity for somebody to come down at their leisure and see if they like it or not,” Hay explained.

Because this is the first year for the program, Hay said he is unsure how many people will be interested but believes there is a need for the program in the community.

The drop-in program began as a suggestion from employees of the club who regularly heard from spectators and fans that although they would be interested in curling, they had no experience, starting point, or team, Dawson said.

“We’ve heard that there are people who want to try curling but they don’t really know how to try. The idea of getting together a four-person team and signing up for a whole winter was daunting. And also it’s difficult to learn the rules in a setting where you’re feeling that you need to be competitive,” Dawson said.

While the finer points of the program are still being worked out, the Sunday drop in sessions will cost $10 per person and start in the evening between 5:30 and 6 p.m. Club members will be able to participate for free.

Established curlers with the club will volunteer their time providing instruction to new or developing curlers, and participants will get a chance to test their skills by throwing some ends before the session wraps up. The format of the sessions will be informal and there are opportunities to tailor instruction to the skill levels of the participants.

The only thing curious curlers need to bring is a clean pair of runners and the club will provide brooms and sliders.
