PCI Saints teams lose in quarter-finals
The Portage Collegiate Institute Saints junior varsity and varsity girls’ volleyball teams both lost in the quarter-finals of their respective AAAA provincial championships.
The JV girls were beaten by Collège Jeanne-Sauvé Olympiens who then went on to take the championship over Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute.
The varsity girls fell to the St. Mary’s Academy Flames, who played in the final against Brandon’s Vincent Massey Vikings on Dec. 5 (result was unavailable at press time).
St. Paul’s Barons boys end season
The St. Paul’s Collegiate Barons JV boys’ volleyball team was beaten by the Goose Lake Raiders in the third-place game at in the A/AA provincial championship in Hamiota on Nov. 26.
Barons’ Michael Bachmier was named a tournament all-star.
The Barons varsity girls’ team was playing in the provincial A championship in Grandview at press time.
Sanford Sabres girls retain top spot
Sanford Sabres’ power forward Julianne Zoppa was named as the Hire Marketing Division’s player of the month for October in the Winnipeg Women’s High School Hockey League.
The Sabres remain at the top of their division with a record of 6-3. They play at home against the Kildonan East Reivers in Sanford Arena on Thurs., Dec. 8 at 4:15 p.m.
Saints to play on home ice
The Portage Collegiate Institute Saints girls’ hockey team pulled off a narrow 2-1 win over the Lorette Scorpions on Nov. 25 but lost 4-3 to the Kildonan East Kodiaks on Nov. 28.
This brings the team’s record to 6-3, putting them in fourth place in the Winnipeg Free Press Division of the WWHSHL. The Saints play two home games against the Beliveau Barracudas at the BDO Centre Centennial Community Club (390 1st St. NW) on Thurs., Dec. 8 at 4:15 p.m. and meet the Fort Richmond Centurions at the PCU Centre (40 Royal Rd. S) on Mon., Dec. 12 at 3:45 p.m.
Trojans split two games
After a 3-2 win over the Morris Mavericks on Nov. 24, the PCI Trojans boys’ hockey team lost a close one the next day to the Mavericks with a 6-5 score.
The Trojans take on the Mavericks yet again in their next home game, on Thurs., Dec. 8 at 7:45 p.m.
Twisters on a roll
The Pembina Valley Twisters defeated the River East Royal Knights 5-2 on Nov. 29 which helps keep them at the top of the Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League with a record of 13-3.
They will play their next home game at the St. Boniface Riels on Sun., Dec. 11 at 8 p.m.
Terriers stuck in fourth
The Portage Terriers notched up a 7-4 win against the Neepawa Natives on Nov. 26, but balanced it with a 1-0 loss to the Steinbach Pistons on Nov. 30. This leaves them in fourth place in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.
Their next home game is against the Opaskwayak Cree Nation Blizzard on Wed., Dec. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the PCU Centre (40 Royal Rd. S).
