When more than 200 local schoolchildren went home on Feb. 1, they might well have been thinking the school day rocked.

The Egg Farmers Rocks & Rings program, presented by Curling Canada, held its first official Rocks & Rings tournament in Winnipeg that day at École Marie-Anne-Gaboury (95 Pulberry St.).

To mark the program’s expansion in the city, and with the support of Curl Manitoba and Manitoba Egg Producers, students from École Marie-Anne-Gaboury, École Van Belleghem, Victor Mager School, and Hastings School competed against each other in a day of curling action.

The event is intended to promote school pride, teamwork and fun, organizers say. In the last six years, the program has introduced more than one million Canadian students to the sport by bringing customized curling equipment into schools for all-day visits, when trained instructors deliver an interactive, educational program that focuses on the basics of the sport.

At École Marie-Anne-Gaboury on Feb. 1, there were 12 different FloorCurl games running at one time to keep students involved and engaged.
