Dennis Thiessen, of Sanford, recently captured his third Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championship.
Thiessen skipped Team Manitoba with third Mark Wherrett, second Jamie Anseeuw, of Oak Bluff, and lead Carolyn Lindner. The Manitoba team defeated Team Alberta 11-1 in the final round of the 14th Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championship in Boucherville, Que. on April 30.
All four team members curl out of the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club.
“This was a sweet win for me and the team,” Thiessen said in an email message. “The team in front of me played just excellent.”
Anseeuw said this is the second time he’s captured gold at the Canadian championships while curling with Thiessen, the first time being in 2014.
“I really feel good about this year’s win,” he said. “The competition has gotten immensely better in the past four years.”
Thiessen also won a gold medal when playing second for Team Canada in the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games at Sochi, Russia, and third on the Canadian team that won the 2013 World Wheelchair Championship.
