Information on a website is useless if you can’t read it, and attending a hockey game is impossible if mobility issues prevent you from entering the arena.

Cartier residents who have experienced any barriers when accessing municipal services are being asked for their comments through an online survey and at a public meeting on Thurs., Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. in the municipal office, PR 248 in Elie. The survey will be available until Sun., Jan. 21.

The municipality is reviewing its current activities to identify barriers, with the goal of creating policies and procedures to prevent future barriers from being created, and viewing the identified ones as opportunities for improvement. Barriers will be addressed on an ongoing basis.

“The Rural Municipality of Cartier is committed to providing equal service to all citizens and visitors regardless of their abilities. We strive to remove and prevent barriers to accessibility and to meet the requirements of the Accessibility for Manitobans Act”, the municipality stated on its website.
Municipal officials will discuss what’s been accomplished in terms of improving accessibility, and also list deficiencies discovered during site checks within the municipality. Accessibility improvements could be included as capital projects in the Cartier 2018-19 and future years’ budgets.

Municipal staff said some problems identified by local residents include snow clearing issues, no wheelchair bathroom in Elie’s Veterans Hall, and no easy access or lifts in the St. Eustache rink.
