Sagehill Stables lose three horses in fire
Sagehill Stables (4180 Waverley St.) say three horses died in a barn fire that happened on Jan. 8.
According to a statement released on the stables’ website, a tractor block heater sparked the blaze in a separate building attached to the barns in the early morning.
Remotely monitored smoke detectors alerted owners Casey Oldershaw and Gwen Donohoe to the fire, who were able to call emergency services and evacuate some of the animals.
“Unfortunately, there was much smoke damage to the barn and it affected many horses. Casey and Gwen immediately called 911 and got all the horses out of the smoke that they could before Winnipeg Fire, Police and Paramedic services arrived to secure the scene and help clear the air. Dr. Dave Snell from Central Veterinary Service responded immediately and with the help of firefighters began triaging the horses we were not able to move,” the statement reads.
Several horses were in critical care at Elder’s Equine and Central Veterinary Service on Jan. 9, according to the statement.
