The new Windsor Park Library is now open for business.
The new building, which is located at 1195 Archibald St. near Bonivital Pool, officially opened its doors on March 15.
According to a news release, the 8,000-square-foot library is nestled among woodlands and features an open, accessible floor plan with meeting and study spaces, a family literacy playground and an outdoor reading area. The new $4.9-million building, which replaces the former Windsor Park Library building at 955 Cottonwood Rd., is designed to LEED silver specifications and is energy efficient with glass walls providing ample light.
Officials say around 25,000 items — including books, movies, and music — have been moved from the former library to the new building in the last two weeks, and new features such as free wi-fi and computers for public use have been installed.
The new library also features new artwork by Winnipeg-based artist Simon Hughes, which is titled Tributaries. The tile mosaic is made up of more than 60,000 custom-made ceramic tiles and references a network of waterways, the human brain, a suburban development, a former piece of public artwork and a maze.
“Our new Windsor Park Library is a revelation: architecturally, artistically, and environmentally,” Coun. Matt Allard (St. Boniface) said in the news release. “Language, literature, and literacy are touchstones of our shared community and I’m so happy we have this beautiful new library to gather, and share them.”
