A number of Manitoba’s francophone arts and culture organizations are set to receive federal government funding.
According to a news release, 11 organizations will receive a total of $2,542,490, which was announced by Saint Boniface-Saint Vital MP Dan Vandal in Winnipeg on April 13 on behalf of Canadian Heritage Minister Mélanie Joly. The funding is being provided through the Development of Official-Language Communities Program, and will be used for various programming and project initiatives in the next few years.
In the light of the announcement, Vandal told The Lance the funding will help these local organizations to continue their work in fostering and nurturing official languages in minority communities and showcasing their art and culture.
“These organizations do excellent work in meeting the unique needs of the French-speaking population of our province,” Vandal said, noting the crop of projects receiving funding “greatly contribute to the vitality of our community.”
“It’s important that young people keep the French language alive for the francophone community, and that we believe in the power of the arts and the power of culture,” he added.
