Suspect in Corydon Avenue shooting arrested, another at large

Winnipeg police have arrested one man accused of killing 37-year-old Noel Talingdan and another remains at large.

On May 29, Talingdan was shot in the 700 block of Corydon Avenue, not far from Bar Italia, in the early morning hours. He died from his injuries. A 28-year-old female was also shot but survived her injuries.

On June 29, police arrested Eric John Boyle, 30, and charged him a number of offences including:
• First degree murder;
• Attempt murder;
• Assault cause bodily harm;
• Unauthorized possession of prohibited firearm with ammunition;
• Possess proceeds of crime; and
• CDSA Possess for the purpose of trafficking (methamphetamine).

He was detained in custody.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Joshua Lucien Peter Turner, 24, for First Degree Murder and Attempted Murder.  

Turner is approximately 5-10, 160 pounds and is not to be approached. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call investigators at 204-986-6508, 911, or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

Police arrest four in Corydon Avenue stabbing

Four men are facing charges of aggravated assault stemming from a stabbing in January.

Winnipeg police have arrested Jeffery Catacutan, 27; Justin Tyler Frank, 29; Simon La, 22; and Jonclemon Librea, 22, in connection to a stabbing in the 700 block of Corydon Avenue on Jan. 7.

Police say two adult males were found around 1 a.m. suffering from stab wounds in the area and were transported to hospital in critical condition. Both were later upgraded to stable condition. Police say surveillance images released to the public that assisted in the investigation.

The four accused were detained in custody.

Captive-bred endangered butterflies released by APC

Assiniboine Park Conservancy’s conservation and research department says it has successfully released six Poweshiek skipperling butterflies into the wild.

The butterflies were captive-bred and are endangered. According to APC, fewer than 100 of the butterflies remain in Canada and the release is the first in Canada or the U.S. The six insects were released at Nature Conservancy of Canada’s Tall Grass Prairie Natural Area in southeastern Manitoba.

“The Poweshiek skipperling is an important part of the biodiversity of tall grass prairie habitat and an indicator of this imperiled ecosystem’s health,” Laura Burns, conservation research specialist at APC said.

“This is an excellent result and a very promising development in our ongoing effort to secure the future of the Poweshiek skipperling.”

The Poweshiek skipperling is a small grassland butterfly species with a historic range including southern Manitoba and the midwestern U.S.

The loss of native prairie habitat, due primarily to land conversion, has resulted in the dramatic decline of several highly specialized grassland species including the Poweshiek skipperling, according to APC.

The conservation project is a collaborative effort between the Nature Conservancy of Canada, the Minnesota Zoo, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the University of Winnipeg, and other partners in Canada and the United States.

Ballet in the Park returns July 25

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet will take over Assiniboine Park’s Lyric Theatre for three nights of performances beginning July 25.

The free entertainment event gets going at 7:30 p.m. nightly and will include performances from the RWB’s upcoming production of The Wizard of Oz, Carmina Burana, and Romeo & Juliet.

“The thrill of showcasing our organization’s talent in our school and company on the same stage is always a highlight of the season,” artistic director and chief executive officer André Lewis said. “I am especially eager to debut a piece of our new production, The Wizard of Oz, to Ballet in the Park attendees.”

Prior to the performances there will be crafting, face painting, and contests. Food trucks will also be on site.
