Starting Oct. 13, the Safeway grocery stores at 920 Jefferson Ave. and 500–1615 Regent Ave. W will close for renovations. However, the pharmacies at both locations will remain open during renos, as will the gas bar at Jefferson.

Both FreshCo locations are expected to open again in the spring of 2019.

“Our customers in western Canada have told us that they are looking for more options when they shop for groceries. In addition to our full-service formats, including Safeway, IGA, and Sobeys, we are pleased to now offer customers a discount grocery experience,” Mike Venton, general manager, discount at Sobeys Inc. said in a statement. “We’ve looked closely at the grocery needs of our customers in these two neighbourhoods and we are thrilled to introduce them to our FreshCo banner.”

First launched in 2010, FreshCo are discount stores operated by Sobeys Inc. Currently, there are 92 FreshCo stores in 50 towns and cities in Ontario. The two Winnipeg locations will be the first in western Canada.
