New faces join incumbents on west Winnipeg school boards

A handful of fresh faces will be sitting on school boards in West Winnipeg following the Oct. 24 municipal election. The results for each division are as follows:

Winnipeg School Division

Ward 4: Incumbent Lisa Naylor was running unopposed and has been acclaimed.Ward 5: In the West End, just 5,318 voters cast ballots for school trustees. Incumbent Kevin Freedman lost his seat to newcomer Cindy Murdoch who captured 58.29 per cent of the vote in Ward 5. 

Ward 6: Yijie Chen is joining the board in Weston. She beat competitor, Rey Sangalang, 56.56 per cent to 43.44 per cent.

St. James-Assiniboia School Division

King Edward-Deer Lodge ward: Incumbent Peter Woods lost to first-time candidate Holly Hunter by just 17 votes. Newbies, Hunter (16.82 per cent) and Nicole Bowering (24.87 per cent) will be joining longtime trustees Jennifer Lawson (25.72 per cent) on the board.

Kirkfield-St. Charles ward: All three incumbents retained their seat in the ward. Cheryl Smukowich received 4,772 votes, Sandy Lethbridge got 4,172 votes and Bruce Chegus had 3,269 votes.

Silver Heights-Booth ward: Incumbent Craig Johnson (18.91 per cent) held on to his seat and newcomer Craig Glennie came in second with 18.88 per cent of the vote. Former SJASD trustee Bryan Metcalfe will be returning to the board after getting 18.38 per cent of the vote.

Pembina Trails School Division

Ward 1: All three Charleswood incumbents — Gerry Melnyk (24.72 per cent), Dianne Zuk (22.54 per cent) and Jaime Glenat (19.91 per cent) — kept their seat on the board.
