Let’s face it — exercise can be daunting for a lot of people.
We automatically equate it to heading to the gym to work out or to take a fitness class. There are plenty of fun activities you can do that are great for your overall health — body, mind and spirit. Here are some fun ways to get active and get your heart rate pumping without feeling like you’re exercising.
Curling
A beloved Canadian sport, curling is an excellent social activity. The demands of sliding on a sheet of ice and perfecting proper technique will get your body moving and muscle groups working with relative ease. Beyond strengthening your muscles, curling also requires flexibility, which is important to your mobility and overall health. You’ll certainly feel the burn the following day, so be sure to follow up with a nice steam or yoga class at your local Y branch.
Skating
Winnipeg is home to the Red River Mutual Trail, one of the most scenic and well-maintained outdoor trails in Canada. Lace up solo, with a friend or with your family. Skating will elevate your heart rate while engaging your mid- and lower-body muscles. If the trail is too daunting, try the rink under the canopy — you’ll still see the benefits (and you’ll be that much closer to The Forks for a post-workout treat).
Tobogganing
Remember the pure joy you felt as a child, racing down the hill on your Krazy Karpet or long wooden sleigh? Yes, it was awesome to feel the wind against your face just before you hit a surprise bump and went flying into a pile of fresh powder. While the ride down is easy-peasy, the climb back to the top engages your glute and leg muscles as well as your upper body muscles. Go to your favourite childhood spot, or find a new one, and feel like a kid again.
Snowshoeing
Snowshoeing allows you to explore the breathtaking trails in and around Winnipeg. Did you know that it’s a great activity to improve your balance, strength and endurance? It’s also a low-impact activity, making it the perfect outing for people of all ages and abilities. And as a bonus, you’ll burn more calories snowshoeing than you will walking at the same speed.
The YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg has been a leader in community health and wellness for 139 years.
