Even though Mr. Humphry isn’t technically a staff member at Beaverlodge School, he is teaching a group of Grade 4 students what it means to be good samaritans.
Humphry is the school’s resident rabbit and the star of a fundraising calendar made by students Kaelan Wiles, Annelie Isaak and Maab Nami.
The calendar features professional photos of Humphry styled for each month of the year. Proceeds from the sale of each calendar will be donated to Popcorns and Binkies Rescue Haven.
“It’s an animal rescue place and it’s like rabbits and smaller animals,” explained Wiles.
Humphry is a popular fixture at Beaverlodge and he even has a standing “Hanging with Humphry” group where students can spend time with the albino bunny.
“Right now, I’m teaching Grade 1/2 so former students can come and visit and other students can come and learn about him,” Beaverlodge teacher and Humphry’s owner Kaytlin Drews said.
Wiles, Isaak and Nami came up with the idea for the calendar during Earth Council — a leadership group at the school — and set to work planning for a photoshoot.
“We encouraged the kids to do a service project, they love rabbits and animals and they knew about Popcorns and Binkies, so they went from there,” Drews said.
Jennifer Leigh of Jennifer Leigh Photography donated her time for the project, Pembina Trails School Division graphic technician Erin Kozier laid out the calendar and the students were in charge of set design — a responsibility they took on enthusiastically.
“They probably had about 50 ideas and we narrowed it down,” Drews said.
The girls found the props for the photoshoot at second-hand stores and brought in items from home.
“I brought all my stuffies in,” Isaak said. “Kaelan had a lot of the camping and the school stuff and I had more of the food stuff and then together we had all these props.”
Each photo of Humphry follows a seasonal theme: in January he’s donning Winnipeg Jets gear; in June he’s away on a camping trip, complete with a picnic lunch; and in September he’s getting ready to head back to Beaverlodge with school supplies in tow.
While Humphry seems to be a pretty relaxed rabbit — he was napping under a table when The Metro visited the school — any photoshoot with an animal subject is bound to have its challenges.
“The school one wasn’t the easiest, there were markers everywhere and then in one of the pictures he was sniffing at the globe,” Isaak said.
Wiles’ favourite photo is a Valentine’s Day-themed set featuring Humphry and her rabbit, Skye.
“I like February because my rabbit’s in it and it’s so cute,” she said.
The project took a lot of lunch hours and recesses to complete, but the effort has been worth it. The students have sold more than 130 copies of the calendar and raised more than $300 raised for Popcorns and Binkies so far.
“I am proud of the calendar and our work,” Nami said. “I love hanging with Humphry.”
