Get in the spring
spirit with Mary Jane’s Cooking School
Wolseley’s grassroots cooking school is hosting its 10th annual garden party fundraiser on May 25 in the backlane of 252 Arlington St.
Mary Jane’s Cooking School was established in the early 1990s by nutritionist Mary Jane Eason, counsellor Wilhelmina Howes, dietitian Diane Yu, and anti-poverty activist Laura Steiman to teach basic cooking and homemaking skills — with a focus on nutrition, cultural traditions and the environment.
The school is a registered charity and the funds raised during the annual garden party go towards its operations.
Activities include demonstrations on making kombucha, home sprouting, making dairy-free milks and building pollinator-bee houses for  the garden.
Prairie Flora will be selling a variety of heirloom bedding plants and flowers, herbs and prairie wild grasses. There will also be a silent auction, live music, face-painting, nutritious snacks and an artisans market.
The garden party takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is free to attend.
Science Rendezvous returns to Winnipeg
The University of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba have teamed up to host the biggest science and engineering festival in the province yet again.
Science Rendezvous Winnipeg takes place on May 11 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at U of M’s Fort Garry campus (75 Chancellors Circle).
The event includes more than 60 hands-on indoor and outdoor activities, including a chemistry potions class, physics adventure show, fruti keyboard, glow wall and liquid nitrogen ice cream.
The event is open to kids and adults of all ages.
“It’s a lot of fun,” said Dr. Tabitha Wood, a University of Winnipeg chemistry professor who has volunteered with the festival for more than a decade. “One of the first things that caught my attention about Science Rendezvous was how broadly inclusive its audience is.”
The Winnipeg event is part of Science Odyssey Week, which is a national celebration of science and engineering with over 300 events across 30 cities from May 4 to 19.
Food trucks, refillable water stations, and free parking will be available at Science Rendezvous Winnipeg. Visit sciencerendezvous.ca to learn more.
