National company opens CentrePort location

Location, location, location is the reason for Techtop Canada’s decision to open up shop in CentrePort.

The Canadian industrial motors distributor has opened its first Manitoba sales and distribution centre in Brookside Business Park, within the RM of Rosser. The 6,000-square-foot office, warehouse and distribution centre is located on Ronn Road in a multi-unit complex leased by Shindico Realty Inc.

Techtop vice-president Shane Hickey said the company has distribution centres in Burnaby, B.C., Oakville, Ont., Montreal, Que., and Moncton, N.B. and was looking for a new location in central Canada.

“It was kind of a gaping hole for us,” he said. ‘“We looked at spaces in all of the major cities in the prairies, and this location at CentrePort was ideal for our new central Canadian distribution centre.”

He said the company needs a building with ceiling space of up to 30-feet, and found that the unit available in Brookside Business Park was suitable.

“We were looking for a newer property,” he added. “For us, we want to develop a more personal relationship with our customers, so we have locations across the country.”

Techtop’s products are manufactured in Asia and shipped to Canada for distribution by rail, road and air. Hickey said this makes CentrePort an ideal location for the company as it is close to Richardson International Airport, main rail lines and roadways. He expects that the Winnipeg site will serve customers in northwestern Ontario, Saskatchewan and possibly Alberta.

“It’s always exciting to see companies who are new to Manitoba moving into CentrePort North,” said Rosser reeve Frances Smee, in a news release. “We welcome Techtop to the RM of Rosser and wish them much success.”

Hickey said the new centre will officially open later this month with two employees and Techtop plans to hire more in the next few years.

Shindico’s senior vice-president and broker for Brookside Industrial Park, Robert Scaletta said Techtop leased the last unit in their complex and construction has started on an 83,000-square-foot building next door.

CentrePort president and chief executive officer Diane Gray said this is the busiest construction season ever within CentrePort.
