As it’s been the “honour of a lifetime” for her to represent Riel as its MLA, it’s little wonder that Rochelle Squires is running for a second term.
Since 2016, Squires — who turned 49 on Aug. 16 — has not only represented the southeast Winnipeg, but has also held some key positions in Premier Brian Pallister’s cabinet — she served as Minister of Sport, Culture and Heritage before being appointed Minister of Sustainable Development, and she is also the Minister Responsible for Francophone Affairs and Status of Women.
“I look forward to continuing the good work and serving the community again,” said Squires, who is married to Daniel.
The couple shares a blended family of five children — “he brought the boys, and I brought the girls” — and two grandchildren.
Squires, who has previously worked as a journalist, said there have been many significant and notable elements to her first term, not least her interactions with community members.
“One significant thing is that I’m always humbled when I meet new Canadians in the community, especially when we talk about how democracy works here in Canada compared to their nation of origin,” Squires said.
“And it’s humbling to see their reactions when I explain to them that I’m here to represent their interests and the interests of their family and build relationships, and explain that as an elected official my role is to be accessible and accountable.”
“Also, it’s a great source of pride for me to be able to work with local community centres, and trying to make them accessible to everyone,” she added, noting that one good example of this is the Jumpstart Community Rink at Dakota Community Centre, which was opened late last year.
In terms of the demands of the role and her workload, Squires likened the chapters of her life to seasons.
“This is a season of work,” she said. “I’ve loved every minute of it, and I’m excited to keep working for the people of Manitoba and bringing about positive change.”
Also running in Riel are Green candidate Roger Schellenberg, Liberal candidate Neil Johnston, and NDP candidate Mike Moyes.
