Scott Johnston is running for election in Assiniboia under the Progressive Conservative banner. He said this election is about trust and taxes.
“What I’m finding is people who have been overtaxed by the government. They are looking for relief. And that is something our government is dedicated to doing,” Johnston said. “We’ve kept our word, we’ve reduced the PST as promised.”
When the 20190 election was called Johnston was the incumbent MLA for the St. James, which he won in 2016, beating out then-NDP MLA Deanne Crothers with 3,532 votes.
Johnston boasted about his party’s commitment to health care, with the new Grace Hospital Emergency Department opening in May 2018. He said Grace Hospital is a “state-of-the-art” facility that is able to service the needs of the community, including its more senior population.
When he’s not running for office, Johnston works in commerce and marketing. He’s the president of the J.F.J. Agency firm, which operates in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
Johnston served as a school board trustee with the St. James-Assiniboia School Division for 25 years and is a former chairman of the board. Johnston is also involved with youth sports, and is a past-president of the Silver Heights Community Centre.
Johnston said residents on a fixed income deserve relief.
“People are looking for a government they can trust, and a government that will ease their tax burden,” Johnston said. “People with fixed incomes need to be taken into account. A good government needs to be aware of everyday costs, and alleviate pressures where they can.”
Johnston and his wife, Karen, are lifelong residents of the St. James-Assiniboia area. They have three children.
Also running in Assiniboia are Joe McKellep (NDP) and Jeff Anderson (MLP).
