The Dakota Lancers swept the AAAA varsity boys and girls volleyball finals on Mon., Dec. 2 at Investors Group Athletic Centre at the University of Manitoba.
The Lancers girls, coached by Sara Harrington, defeated Brandon’s Vincent Massey Vikings in straight sets, 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-20) to take home the girls’ trophy, while the boys team, coached by Ryan Hudson (who succeeded his father as head coach), beat the Westwood Warriors 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 22-25, 25-15) to win the AAAA title for the second straight season.
Dakota’s Brooklyn Olfert was named the championship tournament’s most valuable player on the girls’ side, while Callie Kjarsgaard of the Mennonite Brethren Hawks won the Players Choice award. Tournament all-stars were Andi Almonte (Oak Park Raiders), Carleigh Smith-Banfield (Portage Saints), Alexis Cancade (Brandon Vincent Massey), Arlene Hyra (Brandon Vincent Massey), Emily Scott (Dakota) and Taylor McGillivray (Dakota).

On the boys’ side, Dakota’s Alex Krykewich was named MVP, and Paxton Koop of the Steinbach Sabres won the Players Choice award. Boys all-stars were: Tyson Koop (Steinbach), Justin Cross (St. Paul’s Crusaders), Bryce Cancilla (Westwood), Bryce Magalas (Westwood), Marcus Redmann (Dakota) and Jaxon Rose (Dakota).

Clad in school colours and armed with band instruments and other noisemakers, fans of the Westwood Warriors varsity boys volleyball team made their presence known during the MHSAA AAAA final on Dec. 2, 2019, at Investors Group Athletic Centre at the University of Manitoba.
