Laser tag business a family affair

Fort Garry residents Donovan and Shannon Henzel are on an adventure, and everyone’s invited. In June of last year, the couple took over Lasertopia, a laser tag and arcade facility located in the business park on Waverley.

Over 10,000 square-feet in size, the family entertainment centre offers an environment for everyone to enjoy and to get active away from their office chairs and computer screens.

“There is a lot of reliance on ‘screen time’ in all of our day-to-day lives,” Shannon said. “We wanted to provide an experience where families, friends, and co-workers can come to have a fun and safe experience, and build lasting positive memories.”

She added that they’re always looking to add events for all ages.The venue can host birthday parties, team wind-ups, corporate events, family holiday gatherings, and accommodate daycares, camps, youth and school groups. 

“We just celebrated a 60th birthday party here last week,” Shannon said. “For laser tag we have all age groups, from six to 80; we have kids, teens, and adults all come in.”

The age requirement for laser tag is six years old. For those five and under  (and others of all ages, of course) a full selection of other arcade games is available.

“Our birthday parties are literally stress-free for parents. All they need to do is to book their spot and arrive. We literally take care of the rest, from decorations, food, to a VIP party host.”

The facility is peanut-free and can accommodate many types of allergies and food preferences. The menu includes everything from gluten-free and vegan pizzas and cupcakes, to the ever-popular chicken wings, riblets, pretzel bites, mini donuts, and garlic cheese sticks.

With over 10-plus game modes to choose from — the only place in Manitoba to offer this — the facility gives guests a chance to find their way through a challenging mission-impossible maze of laser beams. The arcade currently offers 58 player positions.

“We are loving this new adventure we are on with our family. We are looking forward to expanding our theme events throughout the year, introducing a laser tag league and having tournaments throughout the year.,” Shannon said.“It’s been fun brainstorming all of our ideas and dreams. And what is makes it even more fun is to have the input from our children Jaxsen (11) and Skyler (eight). To hear their ideas and dreams for Lasertopia is so exciting.”
