The Manitoba Softball Hall of Fame traditionally honours its annual induction class around the time the season begins, while the Manitoba Curling HOF holds its induction ceremony in the spring after the brushes are put away. This year, due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, both organizations have rescheduled their inductions until the fall.
The 19th softball induction planned for May 9 at the Victoria Inn in Brandon will now take place on Sept. 19 at the same location. The inductees include players Rick DeGagne, Rick Denney, John Kalinowski and Gary Magwood, umpire Charlie Kurtz, and Jim Lehman, who was a player, coach, and umpire. The 1976-1980 Winnipeg Colonels men’s fast pitch teams and the Sports Traders senior slo-pitch teams that dominated provincially from 1998 to 2008 will enter in the team category.
The 33rd curling event has been moved from May 3 at CanadInns Polo Park to Oct. 4 at the same location. The curler class of 2020 is headed by former Canadian champion Vic Peters — who was also a fine senior A softball player in the 1970s with the Steinbach A&W Stealers — and his long-time second Chris Neufeld. Karen Purdy, who won titles in provincial junior, mixed and women’s competitions will also be honoured. The builders are Resby Coutts, a former Manitoba and Canadian curling head knock, and Ernie Oliver, the godfather of stick curling in our province. Darcy (Robertson) Kirkness’s 1984 Canadian junior women’s champions and Jeff Stoughton’s 2011 men’s world champions will enter in the team category.
The Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association Hall of Fame induction scheduled for May 9 has been postponed. The induction class of retired executive director Morris Glimcher, Daryl Ford, Gord Nixon, Ken Overby and volleyball teams from Morris will be honoured at a date to be determined.
Tom Parker reports that the lacrosse alumni had to cancel its annual reunion planned for April 26, but hopes to hold its hall of fame induction luncheon as scheduled on Oct. 4. The event has grown in size and has moved from its original home at the Elmwood Legion to CanadInns McPhillips. The class of 2020 has not yet been selected.
The Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum always holds its annual induction at its home in Morden in early June. The word from museum manager Joe Wiwchar is that the board voted to move its 24th induction ceremony from June 6 to Oct. 3. The class of 2020 includes seven individuals: Ron Arnst, Les Charles, Blaine Fortin, Andrew Halpenny, John Kroeker, Morris Mott and Kalam Paull; plus the 2002-2007 Elmwood Giants junior teams and minor teams from Cardale, Carman and Portage la Prairie.
For many years, the baseball gurus stayed away from inducting minor teams but clearly the position of the selection committee has changed. Former board chair and long-time volunteer Jack Callum will be recognized as the HOF’s first honorary life member.
Rick Henewich says the Manitoba Football Hall of Fame has a large and impressive group of inductees for its ceremony that is scheduled for Sept. 18 at the Viscount Gort. Lou Bernstein, former broadcaster Shawn Churchill, Kevin Hart, Harold Jackman, Al Leitch, Bob Lowler, Wade Miller, Bernie Novak, Laura Shea, Len Sitter, Vic Solyo, Chris Walby, David Wheeler and Bob Wilkes will be honoured. The teams being inducted are the 1970 North Winnipeg Nomads bantams, the 1970-72 Sisler High School Spartans, the 1971-72 Winnipeg Hawkeyes juveniles, the 1987 Crocus Plains High School Plainsmen from Brandon, and the 2007 University of Manitoba Bisons.
