Winnipeg’s only worker-owned, organic grocery and vegan deli is situated in the heart of Wolseley.
With eight workers, seven of whom are members of the Organic Planet Worker Co-op, this colourful little neighbourhood gem at 877 Westminster Ave. has been serving the community for 17 years.
Despite its small size, Organic Planet offers a variety of grocery items, home and body products and a vegan deli featuring local and organic ingredients. There’s an extensive selection of bulk food and refill options and a wide range of reusable and zero-waste-inspired items.

As with other small businesses, there have been challenges related to the pandemic but the store has managed to forge ahead and keep things running smoothly.
“Mostly it’s been business as usual with a good deal of added and increased sanitizing of surfaces in the space, along with learning how to give each other more literal space to work — all while serving our customers as safely and swiftly as possible,” said Andee Penner, worker and member.
“Having to work as a collective and truly listen to each fellow member when important decisions need to be made has been eye-opening and has made me a more empathetic and outspoken person, which I am grateful for. I have grown so much personally and professionally since starting at Organic Planet,” she said.
During this challenging year, some additional products have been stocked to reflect the public’s changing needs.
“We have brought in a range of products, mostly made locally, such as hand sanitizers, organic fabric reusable face masks and (we)have purchased a pastry display case for our deli, which not only shows off our delectable vegan treats but also keeps all the food enclosed and covered for extra safety.”
Early in the pandemic, Organic Planet began offering free curbside pickup and free city-wide delivery on orders of $40 or more, making it easier for customers who can’t or prefer not to shop in person.
“We try to carry as many close-to-home items as we can so there are many local farmers and makers who count on us for a good part of their business. By shopping at a small co-op like Organic Planet, you can feel confident that your hard-earned money goes right back into the community where you live,” Penner said.
“We value our customers and want to hear any constructive and helpful feedback on how we can better serve you while following safety protocols and keeping each other’s health and well-being as our top priority,” Penner added.
