Curbside concerts a new twist on seasonal songbook

Geneviève and Pierre Freynet are in tune with the sounds of the season this December.

Geneviève, 29, and Pierre, 37, are the francophone brother-and-sister musical duo known as Gen & Tonic, and the pair is among the acts currently appearing as part of the Curbside Concerts series.

According to the Curbside Concerts website, the series — which was launched by Calgary performer Matt Masters — is a way for musicians to perform to modest live audiences, while prioritizing the safety of all involved and ensuring physical distancing protocols are observed.

Geneviève Freynet told the Lance that individuals can reserve a 30-minute concert on the date and time of their choosing, when the performers will set up on a nearby sidewalk or curbside spot. In the case of Gen & Tonic, audience members will be able to enjoy a setlist that showcases a number of Christmas carols in French.

“We’re really hoping to bring some joy and Christmas cheer to people who need it the most,” Freynet said. “It’s really important for us to help bring a bit of normalcy and share some joy with families at a time when lots of people are suffering. People want something to help them escape reality right now.”

She said the duo performed its first curbside concert session in Wolseley on Dec. 1, when the recipient of the concert was surprised by friends and family members: “It was a beautiful experience, and the weather was great.”

The duo will be accepting reservations for curbside concert performances throughout December.  

 
“This kind of concept is also good for elderly people who need a bit of cheering up and are feeling lonely these days,” Freynet said. “At this time of year, this would make a nice present.”

Gen & Tonic was formed a little more than two years ago, when Freynet moved back to Manitoba from Ottawa, after living there for eight years. The duo is in the process of writing “lots of new songs” and recording a new EP.
