You don’t want to miss out on the virtual programs offered by FortWhyte Alive until the end of March, including creature features, family nature activities, cooking classes and more.

The 50-plus online programs are funded by the Safe at Home Manitoba grant program. According to Carolyn Townend, communications manager at the nature centre, some of the offerings are virtual adaptations from regular programming, like the creature features and nature-based trivia nights. Others are brand new and stem from the interest they received from members, families and volunteers.

“We’re very excited to be offering these programs to Manitobans to help them connect with nature wherever they are. It’s been such a difficult year and we know that spending time in nature actually helps,” Townend said in an email, adding the programs are offered free of charge.

Most of the programs are being offered by FortWhyte Alive staff, including interpreters who are experts in wildlife, sustainable living and cooking. The centre is bringing in guests like Indigenous artist Annie Beach and children’s entertainer Aaron Burnett.

“Owen Campbell, who is our kitchen co-ordinator at FortWhyte Farms, is leading a series of cooking and kitchen safety workshops. They’re aimed at helping families cook easy weeknight meals together. Ranging from chicken or tofu piccata to leftover soup, they’re a fun and easy way to get your kids to help with preparing a delicious and easy meal,” Townend said.

While the centre continues to add more events to the virtual calendar, it will also be hosting a smaller version of its regular Spring Day Camp at the end of March for school children on break.
