From online learning to soccer scholarship

Erin Stewart is an exceptional 18-year-old student who is soon to graduate from Glenlawn Collegiate.

Not only is she a dedicated student, she’s also an exceptional soccer player who has been playing for Bonivital since she played U9.

“We always have great fun with great teammates and coaches. I have really enjoyed my time with Bonivital,” Erin says.

Erin also was a part of the Manitoba REX program for soccer at Glenlawn and with the Valour FC elite girls’ program.

“I love both programs,” she says. “With the REX program we would practise every morning, Monday to Friday, and then start our school day. It was great and it helped a lot,” she explains.

“The Valour FC elite girls’ program was very important to me. Seeing all the girls committing to scholarships to all these schools in the U.S. and Canada. It made me think that I can accomplish that goal just like they did.”
Erin has now achieved that goal for herself.

“I have committed to (play at) Trinity Western in Langley, B.C. I am very excited.”
Erin lives in St. Vital with her dad Kyle, mom Corrine, and brother Cole.

“I would not be where I am without my mom and dad. There are no words to describe how appreciative of them I am,” she says.

In her school life, Erin says she has found the COVID-19 educational environment to be both challenging and rewarding.

“Academically there have been positives and negatives,” she says. “Grade 12 is such a big year. Grade 11 was almost like a test run with the online part.

“Our teachers have been great. Not having anywhere to go, or anything to do, was hard to get used to. Learning to relax and not have to do one thing after another was difficult. I don’t mind the online learning, though. I like that you go at your own pace. I like how you can approach the teacher more one-on-one. Our school has done such a great job with their online approach. I think I was real fortunate to be at Glenlawn.”

Erin is destined to achieve great things in her life, and she offers this advice for young athletes: “Have fun. Enjoy the game. Every time you tie your cleats, go 110 per cent.”
