Your community newspapers are going to look and feel a little different in 2022.

Beginning with the issues of Jan. 5, the six titles published by Canstar Community News will be combined to become two larger community newspapers – the Free Press Community Review East edition and the Free Press Community Review West edition.

The Free Press Community Review, both East and West, will be full of local news, sports and feature articles written by our staff reporters, as well as the community correspondents who write about the issues that matter to their neighbourhoods.

The coverage areas of the two new publications are defined by a line that runs roughly parallel to the path of the Red River.

The East edition will cover the communities of River East, Riverbend, Garden City, Elmwood, East Kildonan, West Kildonan, East St. Paul, West St. Paul, Jefferson, Seven Oaks, Luxton, St. Boniface, St. Vital, River Park South, Royalwood, Island Lakes, Sage Creek, Southdale and Transcona.

The West edition will cover the Maples, Tyndall Park, Brooklands, Weston, the North End, West Alexander, West End, Wolseley, St. James-Assiniboia, Charleswood, Tuxedo, River Heights, Fort Rouge, Fort Garry, Linden Woods, Waverley West, Whyte Ridge, Bridgwater, Richmond West, Fort Richmond,  and St. Norbert. It will also reach beyond the Perimeter Highway into the rural municipalities of Headingley, St. François-Xavier, Cartier and Macdonald, and to the communities of Rosser, Oak Bluff and Portage la Prairie.

All told, the Free Press Community Review’s two editions will reach over 230,000 households each week, and all our stories and e-editions of the papers will continue to be free to view at canstarnews.com

While we look forward to the challenge of creating these two new papers, we will also pay homage to the community newspapers which, under a variety of owners, have served Winnipeg and area since 1917.

These heritage titles will be acknowledged each week in our editorial mastheads.
