Grant’s Old Mill to reopen on May 21

Do you need help with your tax return?

My constituency office at 3129 Portage Ave. is hosting a drop-off tax clinic until the end of April for constituents with modest incomes requiring simple tax solutions. Your tax returns will be completed by a volunteer, and you will pick it up at a later time.

Individuals assisted by the program include:

• adults 65 years and older;

• housing-insecure individuals;

• Indigenous Peoples;

• modest-income individuals;

• newcomers.

• persons with disabilities.

• students.

Please call my office at 204-889-0540 to confirm a drop-off time and your eligibility for this free program.

On March 17, the St. James-Assiniboia 55-plus Centre hosted a St. Patrick’s Day luncheon complete with Irish stew and a singalong featuring live music. It was great taking part in this in-person event.

It was also a good opportunity to connect with Sarah Buchan, who became executive director of the St. James 55+ Centre earlier this month. Congratulations on your new role, Sarah. I look forward to attending more events with your members in the coming months.

It was my honour to present a member’s statement last week in the Legislature featuring Grant’s Old Mill Museum. President Reg Sims and the St. James-Assiniboia Pioneer Association have been working behind the scenes on a plan to restore the foundation of the mill to preserve this local historical site.

The current mill at 2777 Portage Ave. is a replica of Cuthbert Grant’s original water-powered mill built on Sturgeon Creek in 1829. Did you know that this was the first watermill west of the Great Lakes? This mill is a reminder of Manitoba’s shift from a hunting and trapping economy to an agricultural economy, as well as an important part of Métis history with Cuthbert Grant considered to be the first leader of the Métis Nation.

Grant’s Old Mill plans to re-open to the public on May 21, and we hope to enjoy a full summer of tours and events for the first time in almost three years.
