Winnipeg Falcons commemorated with plaque

A legendary Canadian hockey team was recognized recently.

On April 26, the federal government recognized the achievements and historical significance of the Winnipeg Falcons Hockey Club with a commemorative plaque at a special ceremony at the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame at the Sport Manitoba Centre.

According to a news release, the Winnipeg Falcons rose up from their Icelandic-Canadian roots in Winnipeg’s West End to win Canada’s senior amateur championship, known as the Allan Cup, in 1920. Following this achievement, the team went on to represent Canada at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, Belgium, ultimately defeating Sweden in the final to become the first Olympic gold medalists in ice hockey.

Attendees at the recent event included a number of descendants of the Falcons team.
