The Park City is bumping lately, with a number of projects announced last week.

Funding announced for park improvements

On Aug. 25, Coun. Shawn Nason (Transcona) joined Dan Vandal, MP for Saint Boniface-Saint Vital, to announce funding for three park projects.

At Southland Park (175 Royal Mint Dr.), old light poles will be removed, while new light poles and luminaires will be installed. The project is expected to start in June 2023 and be completed in August 2023.

A new playground will be built at Kildonan Meadows Park (1120 Devonshire Dr. West), including new play equipment and swings, safety surfacing, drainage, a granular pathway, and site furniture. A playground renewal at Kern Park (14 Kern Dr.) will include the removal of the old play equipment and installation of new equipment, including play structure and swing set, new safety surfacing, pathways, site furniture and fencing. Work on both projects is expected to begin in September and be completed in June 2023.

“It’s important to respond to the changing needs of the community we serve,” Nason said. “From the lighting needs in Southland Park to the addition of play equipment at Kildonan Meadows and a playground renewal in Kern Park, these investments today will support many more residents tomorrow and promote a healthier community.”

According to a release, the budget for these projects is anticipated to be approximately $500,000, with $494,000 from the Canada Community-Building Fund and the remaining funded by the City of Winnipeg, which has already approved the expenditure.

Transcona to host 2023 World Police & Fire Games

The Buhler Recreation Park in South Transcona has been selected to host next year’s World Police & Fire Games, which will see over 8,500 athletes representing law enforcement agencies and firefighters from more than 60 counties across the world compete in more than 60 unique and Olympic-style sports.

In preparation for the games, the City of Winnipeg’s Parks and Recreation enhancement program has allocated $250,000 to the East Winnipeg Sports Association, which manages the park, to upgrade ball field drainage along with other infrastructure improvements.

“The World Police & Fire Games will be a world class event for the entire city of Winnipeg and will be a chance to showcase the community of Transcona to the world,” Steve Mymko, Buhler Park executive director, said in a statement.

“Leaving investment in our local sporting venues for the next generation is an important segment that the residents of Transcona will be proud of. As Buhler does not receive ongoing support as a regional park this investment will assist in a strongly needed injection to improve a beautiful facility in our community,” Coun. Shawn Nason ( Transcona) added.

Banner project to honour Park City veterans

A new project honouring Transcona’s fallen veterans, spearheaded by Transcona resident Dave Stewart and local veteran Peter Martin, has gained support from the community.

With help from Transcona Business Improvement Zone, Transcona Legion, the Transcona Museum, and funding from the ward’s land dedication reserve, banners will be created and hung throughout downtown Transcona in memory of the 123 soldiers from Transcona who died serving their country in the First and Second World Wars.

“Bringing these names from the headstone to the streets of Transcona will allow for everyone to know them and acknowledge the efforts they took on behalf of their community,” Stewart said in a statement.

Coun. Shawn Nason (Transcona), who approved $12,380 in land dedication reserve funding, has long been a supporter of projects involving veterans in the community, including honouraring street naming and projects at the Transcona Cemetery’s Field of Honour.

“I wholeheartedly supported this undertaking from the outset and look forward to the display once ready,” Nason noted.

While details of the project are still being confirmed, Nason expects the banners to be raised in time for this year’s Remembrance Day events.
