Quilters show off their talents and wares

After a four-year hiatus, Manitoba’s largest quilt show – Quilt Reflections – is set to run at Canad Inns Polo Park from April 14 to 16.

“This show is an opportunity for the general public to enjoy this extremely diverse art form,” said Irene Heilmann, quilt show co-ordinator. “We anticipate over 100 quilts, table toppers and wearable art to be displayed, showcasing a variety of techniques including English paper piecing and appliqué.”

There is a competitive component to the show, in which quilters will be judged for excellence by certified Canadian Quilting Association judges.

“A judged competition not only shows the best of the best but educates the members of the presenting guild in what achieving excellence requires. The overall skill level of our guild has risen dramatically because of this,” Heilman said. Some of the quilts on display will be for sale and to encourage quilting for future generations, the show will feature a non-competitive youth category for ages 17 and under.

When asked who should attend, Heilman said, “Quilters, non-quilters, wannabe quilters, old or young – everyone! If you love visual art, you are encouraged to attend.”

The show is organized and hosted by the Manitoba Prairie Quilters Guild, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

“We have over 300 members and are dedicated to preserving, promoting, and teaching the art of quilting,” Heilman said. “We welcome and mentor members of all ages.”

Quilt Reflections is open to the public from 1 – 8 p.m. on April 14; 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., April 15; and 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. April 16.
