As we enter a beautiful spring season, many projects are budding in our constituency. Our team has been hard at work to develop community-led programs for you and your families.

The Dakota Community Centre is receiving over $1 million from the Arts, Culture and Sport in Community fund. I am so thrilled to see this grant going to a great local community centre and gathering place.

Dakota C.C. is an integral part of our community. The will be used to refurbish its ice plant and maintenance building, improvements that will be appreciated for years to come by residents of Riel and Winnipeg.

The ACSC fund offers grants for special initiatives, and community celebrations in Manitoba, with a commitment of up to $100 million over two years. The fund aims to support Manitoban grassroots programming and facilities in community.

I am also excited to see the $11 million expansion at Collège Jeanne-Sauvé well on its way to completion. I was pleased to have a sneak peek at the new science labs at the school and am eagerly anticipating the opening of the newly constructed classrooms in September. The community has been asking for this school expansion for more than 20 years and I’m proud to be a part of a government that listened and responded.

Speaking of Collège Jeanne-Sauvé – it was a privilege to dedicate a private member’s statement to honour the successful season of the CJS girls’ hockey team. Their accomplishments, names and a recounting of their time together as a team has been recorded in Hansard. Thank you to the students and the coaches for coming down to the legislature to celebrate this moment.

I also had the pleasure of welcoming the Movin’ On choral group from Dakota House to our Legislative Building to honour them with a private member’s statement. I thanked them in the chamber for bringing so much joy and enthusiasm to our Riel community, and for uniting people through song.

Improving the lives of people with disabilities and those who support them is a priority of our government. I was ecstatic to announce that $104 million has been committed to improve disability support programs in Budget 2023. This increases the baseline-funded hourly wage rate to $19 for direct service workers and $20.90 for supervisors and program support staff who provide residential, day and respite services to Community Living Disability Services participants and their families, marking the largest financial increase since the program’s inception.

Another historic investment honoured April being Sexual Assault Awareness month. $1.3 million in funding will support the inception of a community-based sexual assault crisis response and healing program at Klinic Community Health. I extend my heartfelt thanks to Klinic, Ka Ni Kanichihk, and all our community partners for their support in bringing this plan to fruition.

You can drop off any non-perishable food item at my constituency office located at 5-140 Meadowood Dr. If you would like to donate, my constituency office is also accepting donations of gently used clothing, toys and items for Centre Flavie-Laurent.
