A new outdoor running track at River East Collegiate was officially opened on June 7.
City councillors Jeff Browaty (North Kildonan), Brian Mayes (St. Vital), and Markus Chambers (St. Norbert–Seine River) came together with River East Transcona School Division staff and trustees to celebrate the official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the $850,000 renewal project, despite rainy weather. The old asphalt running track at the North Kildonan school has been transformed into a modern, rubberized 400-metre running track. Although the track is located on RETSD property, the three councillors granted the funds to the school division, which oversaw the track’s renewal project.
“As a graduate of River East Collegiate myself, I am delighted to bring this track back to life for this community. When Councillor Mayes checked out all of the Winnipeg tracks in 2020, I agreed that River East’s track was in a sad state,” said Browaty, who led the initiative with $305,000 in funding, in a statement.

City councillors Jeff Browaty (North Kildonan) and Brian Mayes (St. Vital) took a lap around the new River East Collegiate running track on June 7, along with student cross-country athletes and alumni, including Concordia MLA Matt Wiebe and St. Vital MLA Jamie Moses.
“Combined with the recent upgrade and investments to the tennis courts and new pickleball courts at Jill Officer Park, this is a real community hub including the River East Arena, spray pad and Chief Peguis athletic facility.”
“On behalf of all River East Kodiak students, staff, families and community members, we offer our gratitude to all people that had helping hands to make this amazing initiative happen. It serves as a significant investment into healthy living that will be enjoyed for many years to come,” REC principal Brian Locken said.
