The end of June is a very exciting and memorable time of the year for us all, as students begin to wrap up their learning. For those in their last year of high school, it is especially exciting as graduation nears.

Graduation is when art, athletics, academics, volunteerism, hard work, resilience and perseverance is commemorated, and accomplishments celebrated. It marks the end of one journey, but also opens the door to many new beginnings and opportunities.

The journey through one’s education is filled with many memories, including the encouragement from different people who supported and believed in us along the way. These individuals include our parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, friends and most importantly, educators.

Teachers, support staff, and administrators all play a vital and pivotal role in our educational journey. They work so hard to not only teach, but get to know their students individually, creating huge impacts that stay with us throughout our lives. I am a proud graduate of Maples Collegiate in the Seven Oaks School Division and remember my time there fondly. I would like to express my extreme gratitude for all those who helped in shaping this year’s Class of 2023 across all schools, and institutions in Winnipeg.

My parents, Sushil and Suman Sharma, had a huge impact on my education. They immigrated here to Winnipeg 50 years ago, from a time and place where more importance was placed on the education of sons than daughters. They made the journey from India to Canada so their children could have better opportunities Despite their origins, my parents offered equal support to all their children, both sons and daughters. This support was steady and unwavering, even as their children pursued futures in different sectors following graduation.

Education is life-long learning. No matter what age we are, there is always something we can learn, especially with the world changing so rapidly. Always remember: once learned, knowledge and information can never be taken away from you. Education is empowering and drives the change in the world. I can’t wait to see the accomplishments of our new generation of graduates.

My heartfelt congratulations goes to all the graduates of the Class of 2023. I wish you all continued success and happiness in all that you do.
