Top high school athletes in province honoured

The Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association recently announced the 2022-23 high school athletes of the year in four competition categories — A, AA, AAA, and AAAA — which are based on school populations. A male and female athlete of the year was selected from each category, along with the overall high school male and female athlete of the year.

Kyu Fust, of Dakota Collegiate, was named AAAA female athlete of the year. Fust participated in volleyball, basketball and fast pitch softball while maintaining an 83 per cent grade average. She was captain of the Lancers basketball team, which won back-to-back AAAA provincial basketball championships (she was named MVP at both). She was also captain of the volleyball team, participated in club basketball, and was a member of the school’s dragon boat team. She also volunteers with co-op education inclusive sports and coaching at the grassroots level. Fust will attend the University of Regina this fall.

Nicholas Parrott, of Churchill High School, was named AAA male athlete of the year. Parrott played football, golf, volleyball, basketball, soccer, and track and field, while maintaining an 80 per cent average. On the football field this season, he had nearly 1,000 yards rushing, a 10.1 yards per carry average, six touchdowns, 11 defensive tackles, one sack, and was named the school’s offensive player of the year and a WHSFL Division 3 all-star. He was a referee and scorekeeper for junior high volleyball and basketball games, a volunteer coach at the junior varsity football spring camp, and organized the first Black History Month celebration at the school. Parrott will play for the CJFL’s Winnipeg Rifles football team this year.

Colson Smith, of Garden City Collegiate, was named AAAA male athlete of the year. Smith maintained an academic average of 87 per cent and was a graduating honour roll student while participating in hockey, golf, baseball, and ultimate. He was the captain of his hockey team, and the recipient of the 2023 Players Choice award at the AAAA provincial hockey championships, where he was also named an all-star. Smith is also the captain of his baseball team, which has won back-to back provincial baseball championships and he is also a rookie hockey coach for the school. Smith will be attending South Suburban College in Chicago in the fall, where he will play baseball.
