West Kildonan

Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 23/08/2023 (1018 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.

The Kildonan area has definitely changed a lot since I moved here about 34 years ago.

There was probably only one shopping plaza where now there are quite a few more. There are large apartment buildings, condos, three schools and seniors’ residences. We have two coffee shops within walking distance, a pharmacy, hair salons, dentists, fast food outlets, parks and restaurants.

Speaking of restaurants, I remember that when I first moved here I used to enjoy going with my kids to Grapes, Red Lobster, the restaurant that used to be in the old Sears in Garden City and the diner that was in the old Zellers on McPhillips Street. My dad used to love taking us to the Eye Opener Diner and the old Salisbury House. These and more are long gone.

Since the pandemic newer restaurants have popped up in the Kildonan area.

Golden Boy Bistro has opened up at 1969 Main St., where the iconic Blondies used to be. It’s a family-owned restaurant serving a wide selection of burgers, salads, fries, plus butter chicken poutine and more.

Aleco’s Deli is newish at 1853 Main St. and offers a selection of Greek food. There are gyros and sandwiches, salads, soups and desserts.

The sign outside L’Epi de Blé at Main Street and Hartford Avenue has added the name Mithi Bread. It goes by both names and can also be found on the web at thefrenchbakery.online

The old Salisbury House at Matheson and Main is now home to Indian Avenue Chaat Bhandar and Curry which offers street foods of India.

Goodness, we have a lot of burgers out here. The Burger Place on Main is a newer restaurant in this area, situated right inside the Perimeter, where the Eye Opener used to be. (Technically in West St. Paul). It offers a variety of burgers, hotdogs and French fries.

There are probably some restaurants I have missed so if you’d like to send in details or news of your newish eating place or business please do so, to: john.kendle@freepress.mb.ca
