La Barrière historical site completed
The Union nationale métisse Saint-Joseph du Manitoba and Entreprises Riel celebrated completion of the La Barrière historical event site at Place St. Norbert on Nov. 1.
“With the completion of this project, we are preserving our history and heritage for future generations. The La Barrière historical site is a living testament to our Métis legacy, and we look forward to sharing this cultural richness with the world,” said Paulette Duguay, president of the Union nationale métisse Saint-Joseph du Manitoba.
Artist Robert Freynet and historian Dr. Philippe Mailhot helped design and direct the project, which commemorates the wooden barrier erected by Métis militia in October 1869 that prevented Gov. McDougall from entering Red River Territory to enact a land transfer between the Hudson’s Bay Company and the Canadian government. The erection of this barrier is now considered the beginning of the Red River resistance.
“By working hand in hand with the community, we have contributed to showcasing an essential part of Manitoba’s history, offering visitors an educational and memorable experience,” said Normand Gousseau, CEO of Entreprises Riel, which led the project the Union nationale.
Public invited to Perimeter Highway open houses
The Manitoba government has invited the public to give its feedback on the North Perimeter (PTH 101) Highway Design Study at two open houses this month.
The first will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at Oxford Heights Community Centre (359 Dowling Ave. E.) between 5 and 8 p.m. The second is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 16 at Red River C.C. (293 Murray Ave.), also between 5 and 8 p.m. The format for both is drop-in.
The goal of the design study is to develop a preferred functional design for reconstructing Highway 101 to a freeway standard, as well as conceptual designs for its associated structures, which may include interchanges, rail-grade separations and waterways crossings. The study area extends from south of Assiniboia Downs to the south limit of the Greater Winnipeg Water District Railway-Highway 101 interchange.
