New experiences are always exciting and fun. They offer a chance to meet and greet others in a different environment. I thought I’d experienced it all, but guess what? Every “first” flings open another window or door.

The easy bantering between the audience and the entertainers reveal they are both “old friends.” Led Zepagain’s yearly tour of Vancouver Island has brought back a dedicated group of showmen and their fans, eager to show their appreciation.

The lead singer, who says he’s been in the business 35 years, has a heavy “Irish lilt” to his speech. Between my poor hearing and the noisy background of drums, guitars and the distracting light show, it’s difficult to make out the lyrics. Nevertheless the hot music and the frantic actions on stage are mesmerizing.

One avid watcher is so moved by his favourite song, that he holds a flaming lighter on high throughout the five-minute rendition. He doesn’t waver. As I watch from two rows behind, I’m impressed. I understand that at larger venues, the entire audience gets into the act.

It seems I still have a lot to learn about audience participation. At soccer and hockey games, people sometimes reveal their displeasure by throwing articles on the field or ice. Even physical mayhem may ensue. I confess that I much prefer an audience that appreciates.

I’m told that this large location was once a movie house. Now the Spotlight Theatre is a comfortable venue for all kinds of concerts. Here in Campbell River, with a population topping over 40,000, it is much appreciated. Attendance at this rock concert is nearly a “full house”.

Although this city may be described as small, and the downtown easily accessible to inhabitants, they aren’t afraid to travel 45 minutes or more to other small towns seeking other activities. There’s always a steady stream of commuters on the coastal highway.

Sightseers love the many scenic mountain views which inspire an appreciation of nature. Also the carefully groomed trails encourage hiking, extreme biking, skiing and once the weather warms up, there’s all kinds of fun sports on the water.

Vancouver Island residents seem to appreciate their leisure time. A walk on the beach at low tide always draws a crowd of people and dogs. You’ll also find them on the countless forest paths. During my stay I’ve trudged them all.

Yet I still long for Winnipeg, with its extensive art, entertainment and winter events. There’s nothing better in the world than home, sweet home.
