Christian music is gaining more listeners, and many are tuning in to CHVN 95.1 FM to hear their favourite tunes.
The station, at 1-741 St. Mary’s Road, has operated in that location since 2007. Program director Mike Thom said the station broadcasts at 100,000 watts, covering an area from the Manitoba-Ontario border west past Portage la Prairie, as far south as the Canada-U.S. boundary and north into the Interlake.
“We have a large and loyal audience in the Christian community,” he said. “We play continuous Christian music and inspirational programming.”

Thom is one of nine CHVN employees working at the St. Vital site.
Part of the Golden West network, CHVN shares news coverage with other company radio stations including one in Grande Prairie, Alta. Thom said. While bad news can’t be ignored, CHVN staff strive to present positive messages and find the good in current events.
“We try to shine a light and celebrate the positive things that are happening in Winnipeg.”
Thom started working part-time at the station 13 years ago, moving into a full-time position as the morning show host in 2017. He said the station’s overall content hasn’t varied much over the years but it’s exciting to be able to feature music by a growing number of local Christian bands such as The Color, and an award-winning performer like Jordan St. Cyr, who grew up in Niverville.
“There’s been an explosion of local music.”
Thom said CHVN’s listeners aren’t only drawn from those who actively profess the Christian faith but include others who like the positive and encouraging messaging found in the programming.
CHVN’s website offers access to live streaming and its content is updated daily. The site features a Bible verse of the day and devotionals along with news and weather content. Thom said its usership is gradually increasing.
Thom believes that CHVN provides listeners with more than just news updates and music but can supply encouragement for someone needing support.
“I love to hear from our audience and how much we mean to them.”
