Old Kildonan

Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 05/06/2024 (500 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.

Last year in March, I updated you through this column about the 2024 rehabilitation plans for Leila Avenue. These plans were initiated by a motion I tabled at city council. I am pleased to share that, in the coming weeks, the public works department will be using hot asphalt to make longer-lasting repairs on Leila Avenue’s westbound lanes from McGregor to McPhillips streets; and its eastbound lanes from McPhillips to the soccer complex area.

During winter and early spring, the constant freezing and thawing of ice and snow weakens the pavement, which leads to cracking. This stress, combined with the weight of vehicles from increased traffic, creates potholes. This is one of the many reasons why I continue to advocate for the extension of Chief Peguis Trail, as it will help decrease the volume of heavy, regular traffic on Leila.

The full renewal of Leila Avenue is planned for after the water and waste department completes its sewer separation project. This project includes the design and construction of a new sewer line and other green infrastructure on the street, beginning in 2025.

Plenty of road repairs and streetworks are planned for the summer of 2024 in Old Kildonan.

In addition to these plans, I’m happy to share more upcoming improvements to our neighbourhood streets. Pipeline Road will be chip-sealed this year from Templeton Avenue to the Perimeter. Additionally, joint repairs will be made this year to a section of concrete from Amber Trails to Templetonr. Public works also has renewal plans for residential roads, including sections of Hood, Dahlia, McAdam and Carruthers avenues in 2024.

Details of gravel road repairs from May until November can be found at winnipeg.ca/publicworks/gravelroads. The website includes maps for dust control, chip sealing and other maintenance plans, such as dragging, shaping and other pothole repairs on gravel and chip seal roads.

As we navigate construction season, you would download the mobile app Waze to check for lane closures. Waze is a free, real-time traffic and navigation app which shares traffic information from the city’s transportation management centre and tips submitted by other drivers.

As always, if you have concerns about the condition of your roadways, please call 311 or email 311@winnipeg.ca. You can also report a pothole at winnipeg.ca/311-city-services on the city’s website to be added directly to the list at public works.

Reach my office at 204-986-5264 or devi@winnipeg.ca if you have any questions, comments or ideas.
