East Kildonan

Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 14/08/2024 (645 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.

I grew up on Donalda Avenue with many children on the street. In summer we played outside in each other’s yards, chalking our sidewalks for hopscotch and inventing all sorts of things to keep us amused.

I guess I still feel a neighbourhood should be a place to be together.

Today, there’s hardly a soul to be seen on many suburban streets. So, I am very much looking forward to visiting the Glenelm neighbourhood on the night of Aug.17, thanks to the Glenelm Neighbourhood Association (GeNA).

The Glenelm Neighbourhood Association’s annual Meandering Music, a grassroots travelling neighbourhood music festival, will run Saturday, August 17, at homes throughout Glenelm.

That’s when the kids of Glenelm, a picturesque and historic enclave between Henderson Highway and Red River, will have chalked the sidewalks with their own particular artistic works. GeNA has put together a resource kit to help kids with their ideas (for example, how to do 3D chalk art) and will publish a guide for viewers.

That day will become even more special as it turns into evening, when musicians will perform on Glenelm porches as part of a program called Meandering Music. The shows will be scheduled, so people can meander to the next performance stop along the joyfully decorated sidewalks. (Bring a lawn chair or blanket).

I suspect this night will make Glenelm feel like a warm and people-filled neighbourhood.

The next weekend in Glenelm, GeNA is putting on a silent movie night on Saturday, Aug. 24 in the new park space at 243 Henderson Hwy. (at Johnson Avenue) for film history buffs – and anyone else who wants to have fun,

Just as in the days of (really) old, the silent movies will be accompanied by live piano. Grant Simpson will transform what he will sees on the screen into the tempo, mood, and tune of the music. To be able to do this is a true art form, and Simpson began his tutelage early when, after Sunday family dinners, both his grandmothers would sit down at the piano to play their particular personal interpretations of songs.

There will also be a live music night in Glenelm on Aug. 22 (details coming), as well as the mystique of a night market in the field at 180 Poplar Ave. on Aug. 23 (see chalmersrenewal.org for info).

Also on tap in the area is the Henderson Hoops basketball tournament on Aug. 25 at 243 Henderson Hwy. And don’t miss family movie night on Aug. 31 for the community-selected movie If. Visit glenelm.ca for more info.
