Annika Albrecht is a 13-year-old multi-sport athlete about to start Grade 8 at École Précieux-Sang.
“I like the competitiveness in sports,” Annika said. “I like how you lock in and are just focused at that moment on the game. I really like my coaches and teammates as well. Hockey and soccer are my favourite sports. In hockey, I like the fast pace. With soccer, I like the running and the physical demands of the sport. In hockey I play right wing. For soccer I play keeper and defence. I think playing two different positions in the two different sports allows me to have a good perspective of how others may feel on my team in other positions in the different sports I play.”
Being a good teammate is important to Annika.
“Teammates become your best friends,” she said. “You go through everything with teammates.”
Annika lives in St. Boniface with her dad Ben, mom Lisa, brother Leo, and sister Heidi.
“I thank my parents for being so supportive and for doing so much to help me in following my passion for trying different sports. They drive me around and allow me to try any sport I want to try.”
Annika isn’t chasing any specific dream with sports, she just wants to keep getting better.
“I want to get as good as I can get. I don’t think I am going to make Team Canada or anything, but I want to get to the highest level I can and push myself to be as good as I can be.”
Annika is very well spoken and has a great perspective on playing and enjoying the sports she loves.
“You can only control what you can control, things like your effort and how much fun you are having. Be competitive and have fun with it.”
