As concerns about residential crime continue to rise, many homeowners are searching for simple yet effective ways to protect their property and belongings.
“One straightforward way to protect your property is to make it look like someone is always home,” said Sean Banks, CEO and founder of K & S Electronics and Security.
“Homes that seem to have no one home are usually targeted first. Just leaving the TV on or turning on a light can give the appearance that someone is home,” Banks said.

Motion detector lights are often a decent deterrent for would-be burglars.
Beyond installing security cameras and an alarm system, homeowners should also double check that all their doors and windows are locked and remove valuables out of sight.
“One of the most common reasons why we get called is a garage door is left open and items are being stolen,” Banks said.
“There are simple solutions out there, such as timers that recognize when your garage door is open and close it after 15 minutes.”
Other ways to keep your property safe include getting to know your neighbours so you can watch each other’s homes, always emptying your mailbox and joining your community/neighbourhood Facebook page.
“It’s also a good idea to avoid sharing vacation plans on social media, close your curtains so people can’t see inside your house, and keep an outside light on or use motion sensor lights,” Banks said.
