MHSAA adds to hall of fame

The Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association announced its 2025 Hall of Fame class on Feb. 10. Four builders, two athletes and a team will be honoured on May 24 at The Leaf at Assiniboine Park.

The builders to be inducted are all longtime and successful coaches: Bryan Kornberger, Glenlawn Collegiate (basketball); Jeff Small, Treherne Collegiate (multi-sport); Ray Grynol, St. John’s-Ravenscourt School (multi-sport); and Ron Limpright, Green Valley School and Niverville High School (volleyball).

Athlete inductees are Andre Smith, River East Collegiate (track and field), who went on to compete for Canada at Commonwealth Games, world championships and Olympic Games in the 1980s; and Karl Sproll of St. Paul’s High School (track and field), who was a successful USports athlete and team leader in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

The team inductee is the Glenboro School varsity boys basketball squad of 2008-16. The Panthers, coached by Ryan Diehl, made the Provincial A finals in nine straight seasons, from 2008 to 2016, winning championships in 2008, 2010, 2014, 2015, and 2016. Over that period, the team accumulated a record of 206-39 (140-9 vs. A competition). In addition, the team won 19 straight Zone 6 championships from 1998 to 2016.

Panthers provincial all-stars over this time included: Jared Haasbeek, Dylan Thornborough, Travis Strain (three times), Bryce Watson (twice), Tyler Sjolander, Matt Klassen (twice), Riley Rutherford (twice), Reid Gillis (twice), Mitch Jefferies, and Riley Nicholson. Provincial MVPS included John Swanepoel, Carson Rogers, and Matt Klassen (twice).
