Winnipeg’s Northeast Pioneers Greenway is more than just a trail — it’s a thread that stitches our neighbourhoods together with history, health, and hope for a more sustainable future.
As we gear up for Bike to Work Day on June 10 I want to take a moment to honour this incredible space and the legacy behind it.
The Greenway stretches over 6.5 kilometres, following the old Marconi rail line. It was the Gary Doer NDP government that was deeply committed to building a more connected Winnipeg and which believed that investing in the transformation of this former rail corridor was an important step for Winnipeg and today it has become the vibrant active transportation route we enjoy daily.

Rossmere MLA Tracy Schmidt and Concordia MLA Matt Wiebe hosted a pit stop on the Northeast Pioneers Greenway during last year’s Bike to Work Day, and they’ll be doing the same again during this year’s event, on Tuesday, June 10.
This reclamation of industrial land for community good brought together all levels of government and generous donors such as John Buhler, who purchased the land in 2006. Each came to the table to champion the Greenway’s creation, standing alongside the tireless advocacy of local residents. Together, they paved the way for a space that supports walking, cycling, running, dog-walking, stroller-pushing, and quiet reflection.
The Greenway isn’t just a trail – it’s a lifeline. It’s where neighbours meet, where kids learn to ride bicycles, where families find time to breathe, and where we show that climate action doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, it just means choosing to pedal instead of drive.
So, this Bike to Work Day, I hope you’ll join us in celebrating this gem in our community. Come say hi at our pit stop on June 10 on the Greenway and take a ride down memory lane — and into a healthier, greener tomorrow.
See you on the trail!
