One day recently, I received an email from Cheryl Wiebe, owner of Hamilton House, the historic 1910 house at 185 Henderson Hwy. The house was once home to the Hamilton family, who held investigations there into the spirit world.
Wiebe had read my June column “Hamilton House Remains Unsold”, and disagreed with a statement made by a visiting filmmaker and Hamilton family member. The filmmaker was quoted as saying the house is in rough shape.
“Unfair and unfounded,” said Wiebe. “The house has been inspected by professionals and holds a current inspection because of the sale. It is in exceptionally good condition, especially for a house that was built in 1910.”

Hamilton House, the historic 1910 house at 185 Henderson Hwy., was once home to the Hamilton family, who held investigations there into the spirit world.
Wiebe said she is only the fourth owner of the 1910 home and each long-term owner had taken “quite good care of it and loved it; it is beautiful.”
Wiebe understands the house is precious, noting she has taken loving care of it.
“It has a very unique history,” said Wiebe, although Hamilton House has no formal recognition to date.
“It would be wonderful if the community, or the Historical Society picked up the house, did something with it and continued to share it with the public” said Wiebe. She added that it would be sad if somehow the building was lost forever, noting that local and national history would be lost along with it.
Wiebe has spoken publicly about her proposed business plan to turn the home’s attic suite into a short term rental, hotel room-like experience. She said people from the world over were contacting her once they heard of it. But with COVID, her plans fell apart. Upon her retirement, she is seeking to sell Hamilton House.
The stately house was an anchor point in the groundswell international spiritualist movement of a bygone era and its role in hosting international celebrities are significant things that make Hamilton House a veritable heritage gem in the rough.
Who wouldn’t want to see and learn of the home where seances were conducted, recorded and attended by the famous? Why did spiritualism re-emerge in this way at that time? How is spiritualism foundational to many belief systems?
Hamilton House seems to hold a profound story.
