The East Kildonan-Transcona community committee held a regular meeting on Oct. 3.
During the regular meeting, plans were approved for a number of projects, including: a new bank building at 1555 Regent Ave. W; a new self-storage warehouse within the the existing commercial building at 175 and 179 Stadacona St., and 335 Tweed Ave.; as well as exterior alterations at 212 Regent Ave. W.
A $12,000 community fund grant from the Transcona ward allowance was approved for the Transcona and District Pipe Band, following a presentation from Dave Stewart, on the challenges the long-running community band has faced, post-COVID.
Additionally, a $4,000 communities fund grant for the Chalmers Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation’s Winter Fun Day was approved, along with a $500 community fund grant for the Glenelm Neighbourhood Association’s fall cankerworm banding campaign.
The committee also received a letter from the St. Boniface Museum, requesting a chance to speak to the museum’s struggles to re-open in time for its 175th anniversary in 2026. The city-owned building, the oldest wooden building in Winnipeg, is in need of significant repairs.
A public hearing was opened regarding a rezoning and variance application for 637 Edison Ave., from a single-family zoning to a multi-family medium density zoning, to allow for construction of a five-plex.
A few neighbours spoke in opposition, objecting to the size of the proposed development. Another neighbour submitted a petition from neighbours opposed to the project, on grounds of density and traffic safety. The applicant was not present for the hearing.
The matter was laid over to Nov. 12, so that the applicant could answer questions from the committee and have an opportunity to respond to the concerns of the neighbours who spoke in opposition.
Additionally, a zoning agreement amendment for 365-437 Desrosiers Dr., i regards to reducing a clause requiring the developer to provide a setback of no less than 21.42 feet from railway land to any dwelling, was approved by the committee.
